Altostratus belong to the Middle Cloud group (2000-7000m up). An altostratus cloud usually covers the whole sky and has a gray or blue-gray appearance. The sun or moon may shine through an altostratus cloud, but will appear watery or fuzzy.

Altostratus clouds are named because they are middle height clouds ("alto") and are spread out, thin, and layered ("stratus"). Sunlight is often visible through these clouds as in this picture. Altostratus clouds form when a front of warm, moist air meets a body of cold, dry air.

At about 6,500-16,500 ft (2-5 km) an altostratus may form from water droplets, which may be below freezing temperature, or supercooled. From the ground this altostratus looks white or slightly blue and watery. It may form a continuous sheet, as in the picture on the left, or look as though it is made from soft fibers.

Altostratus clouds (altus, a, um, "high", stratum, i, n. "blanket") typically look like thick, gray sheets. They sit about five miles above the surface of the earth. If the moon appears behind these clouds, it looks like it is covered by a veil.
