By coating an insulator with a very thin layer of conducting polymer it is possible to prevent the buildup of static electricity. This is particularly important where such a discharge is undesirable. Such a discharge can be dangerous in an environment with flammable gasses and liquids and also in the explosives industry.

A variation of this technique is electrochemical polymerization with the conducting polymer being deposited on an electrode either the polymerization stage or before the electrochemical polymerization. This cast may be used for further processing of the conducting polymer.

However it is now recognized that there are some polymers which have conducting properties. These are not necessarily complicated polymers even polyactelyene has been discovered to have these properties. This is one of the simplest chain polymers it possesses conjugated double bonds.

Conducting polymers are conjugated polymers, namely organic compounds that have an extended p-orbital system, through which electrons can move from one end of the polymer to the other. The most common are polyaniline (PAni) and polypyrrole (PPY).

Updated: March 31, 2000 ... Polypyrroles are used to form a thin molecular monolayer which is highly conductive (better than carbon); ... To prepare the layer, unsubstituted pyrrole is mixed with one of the Nanoprobes surface active pyrroles (30DP or 30DOP) and applied to a water surface containing ferric chloride.
