A ring is a type of mesoscale eddy that forms when Gulf Stream meanders break off the Stream creating independent circulatory systems. The formation of a Gulf Stream ring is the only way that warm tropical water located south of the Gulf Stream can be moved north of the Gulf Stream.

This is particularly useful information if the buoy is in an eddy or in the Gulf Stream. ... Cold eddies are heavier than the surrounding water and have depressed (10-55 cm) sea surfaces. Data is usually 4-9 days old. Eddy locations pretty good, Gulf Stream location poor.

This SeaWiFS view of the northeastern U.S. shows several eddies along the north edge of the Gulf Stream. The one centered at 39.3 North and 68.8 West looks like ... The eddy farther to the northeast (40.5 North and 66 West) has a much greener center and stands our all the more for its proximity to its clearer neighbor.

They are given names like the Gulf Stream, which flows northward off the east coast of the United States, or the Eastern Australian Current (EAC), which flows to the south along eastern Australia ... If the rubber ducky moves in a counterclockwise direction in the northern hemisphere, it is called a cyclonic eddy.

A cold-core ring or eddy is a ring of Gulf Stream water flowing counterclockwise around a cold, less saline mass of water. It is formed when a branch of the Gulf Stream meanders and encircles a piece of colder water from the west.

Part of this variability arises from the high amount of eddy activity. Eddy kinetic energy along both the Gulf Stream and the North Atlantic Current is at peak values here (Richardson 1983). There is also the presence of elongated, high-pressure cells along the offshore side of the North Atlantic Current (Worthington 1976;

This project examined the dynamics of nonlinear, thin, baroclinic jets, with applications to Gulf Stream meandering and eddy formation. We also studied nonlinear eddies and their interactions in order to understand the better physics of mesoscale eddies and rings. ... Descriptors : *GULF STREAM, *EDDY CURRENTS,

The observations and analyses presented are unique in that Eddy Abbott is the first Gulf Stream frontal eddy seeded with tracking buoys to be followed beyond Cape Hatteras.
