Looking at the inside of this guitar, you can see the ladder bracing that is original to it. One downside to this kind of bracing is that it does nothing to protect the top from crumpling under the string tension.

I suspect there might be a little truth in some of the distinctive sounds coming from, say, Charley Patton, had to do with the ladder-bracing. But even more responsible, I would think, was the materials used, the cheap construction, the strings.

All things being equal however, it could be quite a score. I personally prefer the ladder braced sound to x bracing. My Ladder braced pre war Cromwell sounds amazing and is the only acoustic I own that I can record to excellent effect with totally flat EQ.
