Osmosis is the diffusion of water down its concentration gradient. Normally one thinks of water as the solvent, and focuses on the concentration of the solutes, but water itself has a concentration in any solution.

Osmosis: the movement of water molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. ... Cell membranes are completely permeable to water, therefore, the environment the cell is exposed to can have a dramatic effect on the cell.

Osmosis is the net movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane driven by a difference in solute concentrations on the two sides of the membrane. A selectively permiable membrane is one that allows unrestricted passage of water, but not solute molecules or ions.

Osmosis is of great importance in biological processes where the solvent is water. The transport of water and other molecules across biological membranes is essential to many processes in living organisms. The energy which drives the process is usually discussed in terms of osmotic pressure.

Diffusion, Osmosis and Cell Membranes; ... Osmosis is a special case of diffusion. In this case, a large molecule like starch is dissolved in water. The starch molecule is too large to pass through the pores in the cell membrane, so it cannot diffuse from one side of the membrane to the other.
