Porcellio scaber show a kinesis type response to moisture. They show both an increased speed of movement, or orthokinesis, and increased rate of turning, or klinokinesis, in dry conditions and slower rates of movement in more damp conditions.

Porcellio scaber may have an impact on native invertebrates. For example, Gough Island’s only indigenous terrestrial isopod Styloniscus australis is rare in lowland habitats where the introduced terrestrial isopod P. scaber is abundant, but abundant in upland sites where P. scaber is rare.
