Accentual verse: lines whose rhythm arises from its stressed syllables rather than from the number of its syllables, or from the length of time devoted to their sounding. Old English poems such as Beowulf and Caedmon's Hymn are accentual.

Accentual verse is the other major type of verse in English poetry besides accentual syllabic verse. It differs from the latter in that it is not based on the arrangement of stressed and unstressed syllables into feet but only on the regular recurrence of strong accents (stressed syllables).
