The son of Ahmose and Queen Ahmose Nefretiri, Amenhotep I was the second king of the 18th Dynasty. He may have ascended to the throne at a relatively young age, for an elder brother had been designated as heir only about five years earlier.

Amenhotep I's eldest brother, Ahmose-Sipair, was the original heir and may have even served as co-ruler with Ahmose I for a short period of time - he died before he could become sole king of Egypt, an honour which would pass down to Amenhotep I.

Amenhotep I was the second king of the Eighteenth Dynasty. He succeeded his father, Ahmose I, who expelled the Hyksos kings from Egypt. Amenhotep I probably ascended the throne as a child, when his mother Ahmose Nefertari may have acted as regent.

Pharaoh Amenhotep I led wars against Canaan, Libya, and Mesopotamia (Iraq), and colonized Nubia (the present-day Sudan). In his reign the temple at Karnak was constructed, as were monuments in Abydos, elKab, Kom Ombo, Saqqara, and Thebes.

Next in line for battle were the Nubians. Upon his victory, Amenhotep brought captives back to Thebes. Amenhotep was given the rare honor of being declared a titular god upon his death by the priests.
