Bristow was a Union soldier during the Civil War and an accomplished Republican lawyer and politician. He helped to raise the 25th Kentucky Volunteer Regiment and the 8th Kentucky Calvary. Ulysses S. Grant appointed him as the first solicitor general of the United States.
