Harold Hitz Burton was born into a Unitarian and Republican family in Jamaica Plain, Boston, the son of a civil engineering professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Young Harold lived with his mother in Switzerland, but she died when he was seven years old, and he returned to Massachusetts.
