The various landforms of coastal areas are almost exclusively the result of the action of ocean waves. Wave action creates some of the world's most spectacular erosional landforms. Where wave energy is reduced depositional landforms, like beaches, are created.

Ocean and Coastal Systems ... A coast or the coastal zone is a dynamic region where land is sculpted and shaped by wave action and currents. Barring the effects of tectonic uplift and sea level change, erosion is the dominate geomorphic process acting on coasts.

This is due to the dual processes of spit formation and rapid coastal erosion. The spit grows southwestwards, at the same time the neck of the spit must move westwards due to the erosion of the coastline. Eventually a landform similar to the current situation evolves with an attenuated neck and a bulbous tip.

Coastal sand dunes only develop where suitably strong winds, an abundant supply of sand and a place to accumulate exist (see AEOLIAN LANDFORM). Wind and waves carry sand up onto the foreshore where it collects behind rocks, flotsam and clumps of SEAWEED.
