I did meet Jay Darling's only daughter on October 21, 1976, the one-hundredth anniversary of Jay Norwood Darling's birth. At that time I knew Darling only as a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist and conservationist and as a man whose life seemed to span my interests in American journalism and history.

Jay Norwood Darling was born in Michigan on 21st October, 1876. After graduating from Beloit College he joined the staff of the local newspaper in Sioux City. Originally a reporter, his first cartoon was of a trial lawyer who refused to be photographed.
