DAWSON, SIR JOHN WILLIAM (1820-99); John William Dawson was born in the Scottish settlement at Pictou, Nova Scotia, where he later became superintendent of education. It was in extending the knowledge of Canadian geology, however, that he made his principal contribution to science.
