When analyzing the pn junction, we are most interested in the depletion region, or space charge region (SCR). This is where all the interesting stuff goes on. When we talked about band bending, one of the reasons that it occurred was because of non-uniform doping or an applied electric field.

Near the junction, electrons diffuse across to combine with holes, creating a "depletion region". The energy level sketch above right is a way to visualize the equilibrium condition of the P-N junction. The upward direction in the diagram represents increasing electron energy.

As shown in Figure 2 below, the depletion region increases in the direction of the weakest field (the area of highest resistivity) as reverse voltage is applied. This expansion continues as the reverse voltage is increased until the stress on the field reaches the breakdown threshold.
