John Sullivan Dwight (May 13, 1813-September 5, 1893) made important contributions to the Transcendentalist movement. A dedicated member of the Brook Farm commune while it lasted, he was America's first influential classical music critic.

In 1847 the firm of John Dwight & Company was formed. By 1868 business had grown so rapidly that they found it necessary to enlarge their facilities; hence the old factory on 25th Street was given up and a much larger plant established on First Avenue in the Harlem section of New York City.
