Engelmann moved to St. Louis and worked to establish a major botanical collection when the area was at America's western frontier. He became friends with Gray in 1840 and worked with him to recruit collectors through the 1840s. Engelmann's efforts led to the establishment of the Missouri Botanical Garden after his death.
