Electrons have a negative electrical charge, with a magnitude which is sometimes called the elementary charge or fundamental charge. Thus an electron is said to have a charge of -1. Protons have a charge of the same strength but opposite polarity, +1. The fundamental charge has a strength of 1.602 x 10-19 coulomb.

Neither BCS theory nor London theory contain any charge asymmetry. However it is an experimental fact that a rotating superconductor always exhibits a magnetic field parallel, never antiparallel, to its angular velocity.

The fundamental component of the space-charge field in a photorefractive crystal is studied in the presence of an applied alternating electric field. A general equation for the amplitude of the fundamental space-charge field is derived, and a solution in integral form is given for the linear-modulation approximation.

However, there are two main reasons for viewing the amp as a fundamental quantity rather than the coloumb. One is historical: we were able to perform experiments to measure the amp much much earlier than experiments to measure the charge of an electron.
