Gaper clams have a long oblong show, experienced clammers can easily identify these clams. A quick touch of the show will reveal if your guess is correct. If it's a clam, its neck will retract.

Gaper clams have very large siphons. Having such large siphons enable gapers to live very deep in the underlying layers of sand, thereby avoiding many clam predators. Gaper shells have evolved to not close completely, thus leaving a gape to accommodate the siphon.

Discussion The Gaper Clam lives in a burrow as much as 36" (1 m) deep, and extends its long neck up to the surface of the bottom. Tufts of algae and sedentary invertebrates grow on the hard siphonal plates at either side of the neck.

Washington clams, Saxidomus nuttallii, do not have as much meat at the geoduck or gaper clam. They tend to live between 1-3 feet deep (not as deep as either geoducks or gapers) and have a rather thick shell (compared to the geoduck and gaper).
