Harold Edward Holt was the elder of the two children of schoolteachers Thomas and Olive (Williams) Holt. He was born in the Sydney suburb of Stanmore on 5 August 1908. The family lived in three different cities during his childhood, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne.
