William Huskisson was born at Birch Moreton Court, Warwickshire on 11th March 1770. After a private education in England he was sent to Paris to live with his uncle, Dr. Gem, the physician to the British Embassy.

William Huskisson was educated in England and lived with his uncle in Paris before he returned to England in 1792. In 1796 he was elected as a Tory. William Pitt chose him as secretary for the treasury 1804. In 1806 Pitt resigned and Huskisson lost his position.

He joined (1814) Lord Liverpool's administration, holding minor office until appointed president of the Board of Trade and treasurer of the navy in 1823. Although a Tory, Huskisson was an advocate of free trade and did much to liberalize Great Britain's trading regulations.
