Meagher, Thomas Francis, was born in the City of Waterford, Ireland, on the 3d of August, 1823. At the age of 11 years he was placed under the care of the Jesuits, at Clongoweswood, County Kildare, where he displayed studious tendencies and oratorical talents.

Thomas Francis Meagher was born in Ireland. Banished by the Irish government to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) for sedition, Meagher escaped to the U.S. in 1852. He became a lawyer, lecturer, and newspaper editor.
