Easily the most popular type of movable bridge in existence today, bascule bridges are designed to pivot on a fixed axis. Usually this type of bridge consists of movable 'leaves' fixed to each end of the channel.

The communities along Connecticut's coast and navigable rivers have relied on movable bridges since Colonial times. Wherever highways and waterways intersected, some method of raising the bridge was needed to allow passage of tall-masted vessels.
