SPOTSWOOD, Alexander, governor of Virginia, born in Tangier, Africa, , in 1676; died in Annapolis, Maryland, 7 June, 1740. He was bred to arms from an early age, served under the Duke of Marlborough, was dangerously wounded at Blenheim, and became deputy quartermaster-general.
