William Duncan Strong was born on January 30, 1899 in Portland, Oregon. He received his A.B. degree in 1923, and his Ph.D. in 1926 from the University of California at Berkeley. Strong's interest in anthropology developed under the influence of A.L. Kroeber, a student of Franz Boas.
