Tail-rhyme romance unites a French genre with a continental stanza form, so why was it developed only in Middle English literature? For English audiences, tail-rhyme becomes inextricably linked with the romance genre in a way that no other verse form does.

These are all romances composed in tail-rhyme stanzas, sharing a common story-pattern. Their plot is basically that of separation and reunion: husband and wife are separated, often as a result of malicious slander, but the wife's innocence is vindicated in the end and the couple (and their children) are finally reunited.
