Dome: A steep-sided mass of viscous (doughy) lava extruded from a volcanic vent, often circular in plan view and spiny, rounded, or flat on top. Its surface is often rough and blocky as a result of fragmentation of the cooler, outer crust during growth of the dome.

A bulb-shaped solid that forms over a vent when lava so viscous that it cannot flow out of the volcanic crater cools and hardens. When a volcanic dome forms, it traps the volcano's gases beneath it. ... Geology & Earth Science Webring ... Nature's Wonders Ring...

Most domes are short-lived features, because they are commonly destroyed by collapse partly due to volcanic explosions and due to strains set during cooling. The speed of dome growth varies considerably, but some rise by as much as 25 m/day.

The summit of Tacaná is symmetrical and elongate, dominated by a series of exogeneous volcanic domes extruded along a NE trend. Their location appears to be controlled by a north trending set of normal faults. The faults appear to ... Some explosive activity is usually closely associated with episodes of dome growth.

Volcanic dome atop Novarupta vent, Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, Katmai National Park and Preserve, Alaska. The dome was erupted from the same vent that expelled about 15 km3 of magma in an enormous explosive eruption in 1912.

Dome-forming volcanic eruptions typically involve the slow extrusion of viscous lava onto a steep-sided volcano punctuated by collapse and the generation of hazardous pyroclastic flows.
